Bald eagle soaring 'success,' but at what cost?

Summery: The U.S. Government for over three decades to help the Bald and Golden eagle revover from habitat destruction, hunting, and food contamination, DDT. The government was going to take these eagles off the threatened list, because their population is back up and still growing. However, their habitat was protected if they were considered threatened. If they were taken off the list, develpers would move back into thier habitat and make the eagles leave. This would cause a reduction in their numbers, and they could fall back into the threatened list. Many of them live near rivers. If their protection was gone, the eagles would be under a huge threat. The Government is going to put an act in place that will prohibit people from pursuit, shooting, shooting at, poisoning, wounding, killing, capturing, trapping, collecting, molesting and disturbing the eagles. The most common of these to occur in the past was shooting and hunting. Even with this act, Bald and Golden eagle's population could reduce, and they could fall back into the threatened category.

Opinion: I think what the government is doing is great. I think that this act for preventing the eagles ffrom being hunted, captured, ect, will have a tremendous impact on the eagles population. It will defenitely help prevent them from falling back into the threatened category, although I do not think it will be enough. I think their species should continue to be protected, until their population is thriving. In fact I believe that all species that have a decresing number in their population should have the same act.

Questions:
1. Do you think that this act could work to prevent eagles from going back to threatened? Why or Why not?

2. What other things should this act have to become more effective?

3. Do you think that taking the eagles off the threatened list is a good idea? Why or Why not?

  1. Bonjor!! I totally agree with Kyle in that this act is great, but it is not enough. There needs to be an act that is either better for the eagles, or just keep them in the threatened category. Although i do agree with Kyle and have an opinion on this topic, but I do have a few questions, myself:

    1) Why would the government take the Eagles off the threatened list, if they are just going to put an act in place to compensate for not being on the threatened list?
    2) Is there a certian number of eagles that there has to be for them to be taken off the list, does there have to be a certain rate of growth, or something else?
    3) Why is it important for Eagles to be protected in the first place?

  2. I also agree with Kyle and Maddy. These eagles are an important part of American culture, as they are our national bird, and if they were to decrease in number again, many American spirits would be downtrodden. We need to keep the bald eagles on the threatened species list so that their population can continue to thrive. Maybe, once their population is well under control and it is more likely that their threats will be taken care of and will not cause a severe problem. I found a link that is really good and accurately portrays the eagle's population dilemma.

  3. I completely agree with all of you! The eagles are on the threatened species list for a reason, that reason could come back if they are taken off the list. I do have a few questions though.

Why would they take the bald eagle off of the list if it will just reduce their numbers?

Would the act that would be put in place after they are taken off the list help keep their population growing?

Do you think the eagle population will ever be where it used to be? Why/why not?

  4. i agree with all of you too! If the eagles are taken off the threatened list, then we are just setting ourselves up for the same problem again. Don't get me wrong, the act the government is doing is great, but i really don't think this will save the eagles. We should keep the eagles on the threatened list to insure that they will be able to survive. Maybe if we kept them on until there population was able to increase by a lot, then with the act they would be okay. But as of right now, i do not think eagles should be taken off the list.

In response to your question, "Do you think that taking the eagles off the threatened list is a good idea? Why or Why not?". No, i do not think it is a good idea. Like i said before, just the act will not be enough to keep them off of the threatened list again. They're setting themselves for another problem and unless the eagles are kept on the list for awhile, this problem is just going to keep coming back.
