EPA, DOT Propose New Fuel Economy Labels/Agencies seek public comment on the most dramatic overhaul in the label’s 30-year history

Summary: There are alot more cars and trucks on the market that are fuel efficient, and the buyers need to know all of the information before making a big purchase. Therefore, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have decided that new labels on these vehicles are needed to better inform the consumer about any vehicle they may want to purchase. The main goal of all this is to provide the buyer with uncomplicated information so that they can make the right decision for them. One of these designs centers on MPG and yearly fuel costs. The other will show an estimated fuel cost savings over 5 years and the vehicles overall fuel economy. The DOT and EPA aspire to have most 2012 cars showing this new label in the window.

Opinion/Reflection: I think that these new labels will be very useful. My family is interested in recycling and helping the environment, so when my parents are looking for a new vehicle in a few years, they will want to know how different cars affect the environment.

Questions: How will these new labels help me down the road?
Will this change people's minds when looking to purchase a new car?
Because more people will be purchasing more fuel efficient cars, will our dependency on foreign oil be decreased or will it not make a consequential difference?

  1. Hi Everyone! This is a great article you picked, Erika! I read it through the link and found it very interesting. These labels will help everyone, especially first time car buyers. They will help those buyers to decide weather to pick, say, the Honda or the Toyota. A new time buyer may not know much about either option, but one of these labels will help them decide by giving them all the car facts. A label may change a buyers mind if they did not know something about a car that they found on a label. This new piece of information can either persuade or desuade them, depending on the situation.

America's dependance on foreign oil is currently a big issue, and buying more fuel efficient cars would theoretically bring down that dependance. Even so, it all depends on the circumstances. If people start driving a lot more, then it will not make a difference. If not that many people make the change, it also won't make that big of a difference. Even so, it would most likely make an impact, but until there is a better soulution to transportation without oil or electricity (wich can be polluting, too), it's not going to make an impact on the Earth.

  2. Hello! I think that this was a very good article! The new labels will be helping many people decide whether or not they should buy a car. There will be information on the labels that the future buyers may not have known which would help them into deciding whether or not that car is right for them. Some cars may not sell as well though since the label says everything about them which sometimes, not everything may be a good thing to someone. Such as if it uses a lot of gas, some people may not want to pay for that or they might want a car that helps the environment more. The labels will hopefully persuade buyers to buy cars that our helping the environment more than cars that are destroying the environment, depending on the persons values.

In response to your question, "Will this change peoples minds when looking to buy a new car?" Yes, sometimes it will change peoples minds because a car may not be good for the environment or it just might not be what they had expected. Other times it may make them want the car even more. It really depends on the car and it's car facts.

  4. Hello everyone! I thought this article was very interesting. I also followed the link to the actual article and I thought it was quite interesting. These new labels will be helpful when choosing which type of car to buy by showing the buyer all the facts about the car in one place. This will help to get "gas guzzlers", which are hurting our environment, off the road by showing people how bad they really are through these labels. These labels should also help to take some of the stress of buying a car, for first timers as well as car buying veterans, by showing reliable information about a certain car all in one place.

As to your question, "Because more people will be purchasing more fuel efficient cars, will our dependency on foreign oil be decreased or will it not make a consequential difference?" I think it may decrease our dependency on foreign oil because people will see how bad using non fuel officiant cars is for the environment. I don't believe it will make a substantial difference, but i do think that it will decrease some.

  6. Hey Guys. I thought this article was very interesting just as everyone else did. I think This idea will work. However, i do not believe everyone will be interested. There are quite a few of people who want to save money on gas, but some people will not consider feul effecient cars because they do not look cool enough for them. I do think that the majority of people, most of which can barely afford gas for their car, will be interested in saving money on gas and finding out information on feul efficient cars.

To answer the question "Will this change people's minds when looking to purchase a new car?", I think it will change their minds. It wont chang everyone's mind, but it will change enough to make a noticable difference in the environment and how much they are paying for gas prices.
