Chevron Says It’s Full Steam Ahead for Geothermal Expansion in Indonesia

In Indonesia Chevron expects and wants to start using geothermal power more. The CPI's president announces that the goal is to increase the power supply in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Chevron exclaims about Indonesia's huge potential in using geothermal energy as a major power source. CPI was awarded a permit to build and develop a geothermal field. They have already gotten to work at completing this. They have not been willing to comment on how much this field will cost, or the harmful gases and minerals that may be exposed. These can cause serious health issues. Hamid states that there will be plenty of opportunity to create electricity because of such huge growth.

Opinion:
I am surprised to here this news, believe it or not. When I was doing a little research on geothermal energy for my presentation, I found that it is extremely difficult to have a geothermal field, because there are few places where the rock is permeable enough to be drilled deep enough. Here in Indonesia, they say they found a huge plot of land that can be used to make a geothermal field. I think it's great that they found this land, and it's not already owned by a company that wants to use the land for something else less useful.

Questions:
Do you think this could become there major source of energy there?

Do you think that geothermal energy is a reliable resource of energy? Could we use it as our major source of energy?

How much longer do you think we have before we have to decide on what our source of energy will be?

  1. This is probably a very good thing for Southeast Asia. This area of the world has an extremely high population, and all of these people need energy to move on with their lives. I don't know the details, but I would guess that this area uses lots of the energy throughtout the world, and needs a way to decrease the fossil fuels. We typically don't think of Southeast Asia when we think of energy consumption, but we definitely should because they have many people who need power to create food and factories and new technologies. I agree Kyle, I was surprised that Indonesia had a suitable area for a geothermal field. It doesn't seem as if they would, but if the area doesn't need to be very big then I guess it is believable. However, I would not want to live near this area because of the negative health effects Kyle mentioned. I have some more questions about how this will work:

    1) Will there be requirements on how close residential areas may be from this area?

    2) Is it likely that since this geothermal field was found, more will be as well?

    3) Should geothermal energy be used in all possible areas or is it too dangerous and/or costly?

  2. As Erika said, This probably is a good thing for them. It's a great way for them to not use as much fossil fuels and it will be creating a lot of energy. The only thing is, the health effects. It maybe be good for the earth but is it good for the people? No, so depending on how much this is going to harm people, i don't think they should use geothermal energy. I think they should find a different way of getting energy that will be safer for humans and for the earth. But i guess it really depends on the people who live there, they may or may not want to continue living there and that is their choice.

In response to your question, "Do you think this could become there major source of energy there?". Yes i think it could become their major source of energy but that doesn't mean i think it should. I think the health of their people is most important since there are things that will harm them from using this source of energy.

  3. Wow! this is so interesting! I never would have thought that they could use geothermal on such a large scale. I always thought it was used mainly for small household heating.

In response to your question: "Do you think that geothermal energy is a reliable resource of energy? Could we use it as our major source of energy?"
I do not think that geothermal energy is a reliable resource because what happens when that area of land runs out of heat? the people depending on that energy will be out of luck. I think it should be used to help our sources of energy but definitely not be a major source.

  4. Wow! I agree with Annemarie, I never knew that geothermal was so big, I always thought it was just a small scale house thing. Well, this is great for that country because they can now get energy for so much cheaper! This will definatly boost their economy, and in turn their economy boosting will boost the economy of the whole world! This is fantastic, i am so happy for them and if I were there, i would wish them the best of luck!!

I found this neat picture of a geothermal plant and thought it would be cool to share :)
