"Kissmas" Tree to light up Covent Garden By: Tony Cross
http://www.cntraveller.com/news/2010/october/covent-garden-kissing-christmas-tree-london

In this article a unique Christmas tree is powered by, well, KISSES! Hopefully, kids our age don't know this feeling too well, but when you kiss your significant other, a jolt of energy will go through you. Paul Cocksedge put this energy to good use when he invented the kissmas tree. It is designed to capture the electricity from your kiss and transfer it into energy used to power over 50,000 lights! When two people stand under the giant mistletoe, they each grab a leaf. When they kiss, their energy is harnessed in through the giant mistletoe leaves and is therefore used to power the kissmas tree. Finally, every kiss made underneath the mistletoe, there is a donation made to The Prince's Trust youth charity. So, not only does this invention power a Christmas tree with something that, quite frankly, would have been done anyway, but it also donates to a great, cause!

In my opinion, this is a really neat contraption! I mean, who knows how much electricity would have been wasted without all those smooches! I mean, 50,000+ lights sounds incredibly excessive especially since that most likely have been fossil fuels before. So, I think that this will be an incredible money saver for England (where this tree just so happens to be) and i think that the people will really enjoy it and have fun with it, considering how common PDA is these days...

Questions!!!!!:

1) Why is this such a big money saver??
2) Do you think that this concept of kissing=energy could ever be something more, perhaps something year-round that could be used to provide energy for homes and whatnot? essentially, could this concept be something bigger??
3) Do you think that there will be a large showing at the unvailing of this tree??

  1. Whoa this is really neat! Great find Maddy! I find it truly amazing that the power of a kiss can provide electricity for all of the lights on an entire Christmas tree! That is extremely cool. I also find it great that the kisses used to power the lights on the tree will end up helping a great cause, this time in the form of giving money. So, basically, the kisses under this tree are saving/giving money in two ways. However, I would be a tad disgusted if I just sat there watching the tree...there are bound to be many, many public displays of affection there and I don't exactly love that...

I found a great video related to this article! Check it out:

  2. Wow, thats unreal. I had no idea that we today had the technology to do this. However I don't think that this source of enegy can ever be used to power homes, because no one would have the time to come and kiss each other, especially because you would need like 100 kisses a day to power a house for one day. I still think that this was a really cool way of powering the chrismas tree. I am intrigued of how they came about of building such a machine.

Heres a link I found of Japan using an Electric Eel to power a christmas tree: http://www.weirdasianews.com/2010/12/08/japan-electric-eel-light-christmas-tree/
    Enjoy

  3. Wow maddy! this was actually a very interesting article! I think that is amazing that 1) someone could actually discover something like this and 2) a kiss can create energy!! I've never even imagined something like this being discovered. It is truly amazing and it saved a lot of energy and money since there is no need to pay for power for the lights since people walking by and tourists are going to be providing it! I hope one day i can visit this tree and see this amazing contraption in action!

I have some questions of my own,
    1) Will they be able to create more things like this that will save energy for many other things?
    2) How long did this guy spend creating and figuring out something like this?
    3) How long does each kiss make the lights last for?

  4. wow! that is so cool! It's great that they've found a way to power something by kisses! kisses bring joy in more way than one now! i hope i can walk by and actually see this sometime!
i have some questions of my own:
-could this turn into a renewable energy source able to power the energy for alot of the world?
-Is technology like this the future of renewable energy sources?
-How did someone come up with the idea for this?

  5. Did a little research, I think there is a battery that powers this, and the "kiss" just closes the circuit, I think. I only quickly scanned an article. Still very interesting concept!!
